The blue-dyeing Kovács family |
 | | Miklós Kovács Folk Art Master | | |
|
According to written records, the Kovács family has been producing blue-dyed products since 1878. In the second half of the nineteenth century, a workshop was founded in Kecskemét and later in Kiskunfélegyháza. The final workshop opened in Tiszakécske in 1926. The workshop at Körösi St. 9 in Tiszakécske with equipment from the turn of the last century is a rare find not only in this country, but in Europe as well. The founder, Miklós Kovács, was awarded the title “Folk Art Master” in 1985. His wife has been creating respected folk art and handmade tablecloths since 1982. |
The Kovács children are carrying on the family tradition. Mária Kovács, who also directs the Szentendre shop, became a folk artist in 1989. The shop at Hungary, Bogdányi Str. 36. in Szentendre (phone: +36 (26) 314 388) is the only such establishment in the country where a full range of this type of quality-controlled folk art, produced according to traditional methods, can be found. The unique products including fabric, tablecloths, skirts, aprons, shirts, children’s and adult clothing, accessories and many more can be purchased directly from the artisans. She uses blue-dying patterns originating from the beginning of the last century and also creates styles to fulfill modern needs. |

Her husband, Ferenc Panák, is also a blue-dying folk art master who makes fabric on a “perottin” pattern machine made by the Bauch company in 1904. The family has exhibited their own designs of unique and traditionally produced works, which meet the standards of the Hungarian Folk Art Committee, both in Hungary and abroad. |
The original blue-dying was a cold indigo dye completed in a large in-ground dying tub. Since the beginning of the last century, the process has included the use of an indanthrene warm dye, according to the family’s written instructions from 1932:
Boiling. The raw cotton canvas cloth is boiled in a baking soda bath. Rinsing.Impurities are rinsed away with clean water. Drying. The cloth is dried outdoors on a special rack, in a wavy line. Pressing. The canvas prepared for printing is fully pressed. Drawing. The cloth is marked with the desired pattern. Printing. The fabric is covered with a plate with the “priest” pattern. Dyeing. The cloth is dyed in a tub according to a special recipe at 85˚C. Rinsing. The patterned plate is removed and the cloth is rinsed. Washing. The excess dye and impurities are washed away in clean water. Drying. The cloth is dried outdoors on a special rack, in a wavy line. Starching. The cloth is starched with hot potato-starch. Drying. The cloth is dried outdoors on a special rack, in a wavy line. Pressing.Steam and steel rollers are used along with high pressure to ensure the shiny quality of the cloth. |
